I am scheduled for my bilateral masectomy on august 23rd. I am getting silicone implants and no tissue expanders. The doctor is using Alloderm. Is anyone familiar with this?

My doc used Alloderm too. But I had tissue expanders. I know there are women on here who went right to implants - not sure which part you are asking about...

i'm not sure what I'm asking either, to be quite honest. LOL! I guess I'm curious about going straight to implants because it seems like most have had a separate surgery for the implants them selves. Just curious as to how that decision came about

I think whether they can go straight to implants or not, depends on several factors some of which they cannot predict before surgery, e.g. what state your tissue is going to be after mastectomy. Your anatomy and size of the implant matter too.
My PS told me before surgery she would do direct to implant if possible but I woke up with expanders. She later said the tissue was too damaged. Honestly, I don't understand how it might be possible to put 500ml immplants under the pectoral muscle before it is stretched. I suppose it might work with smaller implants.
    Good luck with the procedure!

I had a BMX and went right to silicone implants with alloderm for reconstruction, no TE's. I would be glad to answer any questions you might have? Good luck with your surgery:) (((Hugs))) Maureen

I did! Went direct to 650cc implants with alloderm at same time as a double mastectomy and SNB.

Feel free to ask me anything you would like to know!

TRBAllenTX: I guess we're not sure what your question is. Do you want to know more about going straight to implants (no TEs)? Or are you wondering about the Alloderm?

Straight to implants means that you get to skip the tissue expander phase. Our breast tissue is above the muscle, but the implants lie below the pectoral muscle. The tissue expanders expand the muscle as well as the skin to make room for the implants. I had skin-sparing/nipple-sparing mastectomy, but my muscle still needed to be stretched.

Alloderm is a "non-cellular mesh" that is used to support the implants. The mesh supports the implants, especially where there is no muscle, or a cut in the muscle. Non-cellular means there are no cells, thus nothing, no foreign DNA for your body to reject.

    I hope that helps.

Hi everyone. I also had BMX with direct to implant reconstruction. My recovery was uneventful and did not need any other surgeries. The only issue is that I was a DD before and now I am a full C. That was the biggest implant the PS could do. It's been 18 months and now I am finally adjusting to the smaller size. Actually I'm enjoying it! Please feel free to ask me any questions. Good luck to all...

My daughter had double mastectomy with expanders 10 days ago. The skin on the flap of one breast is dead and had to be removed. Any recommendations to stop this from happening again?

1-worried mom, the surgery your daughter had is very different than the one discussed here, but there are several threads on your daughters surgery topic. Check out the tram flap forums.

    Here is one
