the federal government does not consider homemakers as a job. I didn't pay into the federal system. My husband did. So when you get cancer you will get nothing. No ssi because you are married, no ssd because you didn't work. So disgusted

I worked for 35 years outside home paying maximum amount a year for social security. I was kind of forced out because company wanted to replace older experienced higher paid workers with young cheaper workers. I left and tried to get ssdi, AI drugs were crippling for me and the fatigue unbelievably. I found a full time job impossible but I was denied.

That sucks Meow. All those years you paid into the system. I heard everyone gets denied the first time and the best way to get it is hire an attorney. Shouldn't have to but seems to be the norm.

Your job scenario is so prevalent these days. Happened to several people I know. My sister dodged all the layoffs and outsourcing. She recently retired from IBM after 36 years! Several of my family members including myself worked for corporate America. Cutthroat to be sure. It's all about the almighty dollar.

Ladies, once you get denied, call a SSD lawyer immediately. They will get it for you, even if you might get denied a few more times. Yes, you will have to pay them, but: 1. you pay nothing in advance. They get their money when you get yours. The only thing you might have to pay is for any amounts dr. offices charge them for medical records. But you also pay that after you get the money. Yes, it feels like you pay them a lot, but, guess what? you pay them out of money that you wouldn't have gotten without them acting on your behalf.

smg, your husband's income is higher than the minimum required for a couple that is why you don't qualify for SSI? I know in some cases they deem the quarters worked by the husband but you might want to consult a lawyer. Most of them give free initial consultation.

I do have one really nice benefit I was told I might lose on ssdi. I currently have a cadillac medical insurance I pay $10 a month for through the company I retired from. I got my 2 kids on for $20 more dollars a month. My husband is 65 so I get supplemental to medicare $270 a month for him. So a grand total of $300 a month premo health care. I think if I go on ssdi I would have to go on medicare it might not be worth it. I have run the numbers. Luckily I have a pension and so does my husband. It would be nice to have social security.

My doctors look at me and think I'm fine, well I am now since I ditched the AI drugs. But I'm not sure I should stay off the drugs, a recent scare has me rethinking it.
