Has anyone had a femur fracture treated without surgery?

My mother has a nondisplaced femur fracture and the orthopedic surgeon she was referred to said she won't require surgery. The plan is immobilization (she is wearing a brace from top of thigh down to her ankle), radiation, and maybe physical therapy. Since she was taken to her small town emergency department, I can't help but question whether or not this is right as everything I have read has said that femur fractures usually require surgery.

Has anyone had a femur fracture that didn't require surgery? If so, what sort of recover/rehab can we expect?
