In denial ...

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with Stage 3 TNBC in December 2014 but after a FISH test, my diagnosis was changed to HER2+. I did 26 weeks of chemo - 12 infusions of Taxol (incl 4 infusions of Perjeta and Herceptin) and 5 infusions of AC - I completed chemo in July 2015 and had a mastectomy in August 2015 and 25 fractions of radiation in Oct/November 2015. After my mastectomy, my diagnosis was changed back to TNBC but I completed the course of Herceptin on my onco's advice. I completed the Herceptin on the 1st of June.

On 15 February 2016 my onco did a full body CT scan as a routine check, the scan was clear and my tumour markers were stable. She was very happy and said we would do another CT in six month's time. Around the time of my last Herceptin infusion, I started feeling generally unwell and thought it may just have something to do with me being run down after all the treatment. By last week, I was still not feeling great and just checked in with my onco. She agreed that I was possibly just "run-down" but due to some numbness in my face decided to do a brain MRI and another full body CT scan. The brain MRI came back clear but the CT scan was a different story.

It appears that I have three or four swollen lymph nodes in my chest, 8 nodules on my left lung and 6 nodules on my right lung. The nodules on the right lung are all tiny - between 1 and 2mm but the nodules on the left lung are all between 1 and 3cms. Onco is concerned and I am terrified. I have an underlying autoimmune condition and saw the rheumatologist yesterday to rule out any connection to that. She has done this although she has run a number of blood tests. Next step is a PET CT and a lung biopsy - just waiting for approval from my health insurance.

What should I expect going forward?

Gosh, I have no idea.... But, I'd imagine the PET scan might give your doctors more clues about what's going on. Some lung nodules are benign, and doctors just look to see whether they undergo changes over time. For example, my husband has some lung nodules, but they haven't changed in size since they were first discovered. Hence, his pulmonologist isn't really that worried about them. However, it sounds like your doctors aren't willing to wait to see if there have been any changes and will be attempting a biopsy. Either way, ((HUGS)))!

The PET should provide more clues. Sorry you are dealing with this. Keep us posted.
