Biopsy next week
Hello. I decided to post partly to keep a timeline in case my biopsy comes back positive. I currently have a 4 month old and am nursing. The end of April I noticed a lump and instantly thought it was a clogged duct. I was doing everything I could to clear it because I didn't want to end up with mastitis. I had it with my first and didn't want to revisit that. Two weeks later it was still there but no sign of mastitis.
I happened to be seeing my doc on May 9th for a mole on my chest and decided to ask her opinion on the lump. She decided to go ahead and refer to me the breast clinic. I got a mammogram on the 25th and then an ultrasound that day. The radiologist said she believes it's most likely a galactocele but they prefer to err on the side if caution. The sooner they could schedule me for a biopsy is June 13th. Thank god they also scheduled me for a result appointment the 15th. I know the odds are ever in my favor here.
I am not looking forward to not being able to pick up my chunk of a 4 month old as much for a couple of days though it's worth it. And as optimistic as I am the waiting is killer. And it causes me to look at things that can be explained away but I can't help but to notice more. Like the fact that the breast with the lump has been at least twice as big as the right for a few years. Our that my youngest strongly prefers the right breast. Our that I've looked at blood tests the last couple of years and my white blog count has been riding high. All things that could have completely normal reasons. Only a week until my mind can be put at ease at least. I hope I can come back and tell everybody good news and if not at least there's a place to come for support.
My report from my ultrasound is below. The way I see it there are good and not as good things written.
In the 1:00 position, 7 cm from the nipple, there is a
heterogeneous predominantly isoechoic mass with posterior
acoustic shadowing measuring 18 x 14 x 21 mm. This corresponds
with the palpable and mammographic mass. This likely represents
an atypical galactocele in this lactating patient. Tissue
sampling is recommended to exclude malignancy.
Assessment: Suspicious (BIRADS 4)

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Your Ultrasound report actually looks pretty good. As you may know, BIRADs 4 simply means there is something there that needs a closer look. 80% of them will be totally benign. With your age in mind, and the fact that you are lactating, I think this lump is very likely to be non-malignant. Of course, you won't know until it's biopsied, so I hope that goes well and you get good results.

Good news. I didn't even have to wait the full two days for my results appointment. They called Tuesday the day after the biopsy to tell me it was benign, a galactocele. They'll have me get an ultrasound in 6 months to check up, but so relieved.
