Pam, gentle hugs go out to you. I had papillary carcinoma with mixed types of invasion. One of the pathologists said that my 3 cm papillary tumor had grown to that size in less than a year (estimated at 9 months), although mitosis in the tumor was high with fast proliferation.

An MRI and 2nd opinion on pathology might be in order in your case, as what constitutes "frank invasion" in papillary seems to vary among pathology labs.

I'm attempting to analyze your question, and the fact that you need a second surgery is confusing, if it was only in situ or residing completely inside the duct. I'm sorry to say that I really wouldn't know how to express an opinion without having more information on your pathology. I wouldn't rush to a 2nd surgery without having a 2nd opinion pathology and MRI. (Papillary can be multi-focal, but is usually not visible if it's under 5 mm,)

You may read thru the papillary thread on this site also. Hang in there
