Omeprazole side effects

Options

I did my first chemo treatment 10 days ago.I think I am having two reactions from the Omeprazole: I broke out in pimples on face, behind ears and a little on neck and chest. Just little surface white heads , not really acne. I also got pain peeing so likely a UTI ( doctors knows did urine sample Friday). He thought the Omeprazole is giving me the pimples - did any of you experience this ? Will it go away ( started taking it 10 days ago after first chemo ) and is there an alternative to Omeprazole ?

Not looking forward to being bald and pimply !

I had pain when urinating after starting chrmo I thought for sure was uti but it was all negative I was dry down there and everywhere else and it burned to pee..I still take it due to lingering digestive issues and don't think I have any side effects

I have been taking Omeprazole for 10 years due to GERD. This was more than 5 years before my diagnosis. I have never had an issue with it. My skin is Clear. In fact, Regardless of my cancer people think I am in my 30s, even though I am 54. So it is quite likely your skin is reacting to the toxins in your chemo rather than the antacid Omeprazole.

You could certainly try switching to a different drug and see whether those symptoms go away. Acid blockers are like antihistamines, there are a bunch of different drugs that do basically the same thing, and different ones work best for different people. FWIW my MO had me on ranitidine throughout chemo.

Maddiemiami - I did not have chemo, so I can't respond to your question.

But I can tell you what my MO did when I went in for my yearly exam: she saw Omeprazole on my list of meds and asked why I was on it. Frankly, I had forgotten. She said "I'm taking this off your list. They're finding out that this drug can be very bad news. If you have symptoms, take Pepcid."

Basically, Omeprazole is a Proton-Pump Inhibitor.

Pepcid is a Histamine 2 Blocker. They eliminate heartburn and GERD by different mechanisms.

Here is just one source of information: http://www.drugs.com/answers/support-group/omeprazole/news/

    It's worth asking your doc.
