I have lymphedema related to infection after CLND related to Melanoma stage 3. Lymphedema comprises Left arm and breast resulting in breast being twice the size of right breast accompanied by skin thickening and orange peel appearance. I have mammos every six months. Last mammo showed two tumors and biopsies showed atypical lobular hyperplasia, focal ducal atypical hyperplasia , flat epithelial atypia. Radiology suggests full excision of both areas. The breast center NP called with the results on a Monday and explained breast center protocol for excision in case something was missed in biopsy, scheduled appt. to come in Wednesday to schedule surgery . Tuesday am Dr calls - just a couple of 'a-typs' and says she'll cancel appt.?!?! Sorry this is so long. I am confused, the NP and the MD are in the same practice . No follow up, just goodby

Hi RUmom! Welcome to the community.

So then they are not going to do surgery, or they just postponed it? We understand that you are confused, who wouldn't! We're sure someone will post soon with their thoughts, experiences and support, but we wanted to let you know we're thinking of you!

    Best wishes,

This makes no sense to me at all. I would press for an explanation and also get a second opinion. Was the doctor who called you to cancel the excisional biopsy the same one who told you that you needed one

our local hospital has a dedicated breast center;two MDs, two radiologists specializing in BC and the NP.

Radiologist wanted the excision, NP called to schedule saying that was the breast centers protocol 'excision'. Breast center MD called and cancelled said it was just 'a-tips'

Local hospital is affiliated with world renowned hospital.

My melanoma oncologist said BC wasn't his forte, he tried to call breast center MD but she never returned his call.

Even when the dx is "just atypia", in the event of ADH, at least, the standard protocol is to do an excisional biopsy, to make sure there is nothing else more serious (DCIS, for instance), lurking that was not visible via the radiology.

Can you travel to another for a second opinion? Or perhaps send your slides to a larger facility? The lack of communication here would make me uncomfortable.

    URmom,

PLEASE obtain another doctor for another opinion! My BS said, "ADH MUST be excised." Please, update here!
