Now for the wait
I had posted on another forum "not diagnosed", well still not diagnosed but had 2 biopsies this morning. One for mass 7mm , one for agricultural distortion 3cm. Both were so close to each other not sure if they could do both without one distorting the other. All worked well. Biopsies were not bad pain or discomfort wise. Doc was hoping mass would collapse but didnt. Finally got out of them a diagnosis of birads 4b. Now the wait begins..2 to 4 days. At least I can go back to work tomorrow, be myself and enjoy taking care of my clients. No worries!!!

Waiting is so difficult and there is so much of it. Wishing you the best with your results. Donna.

Got results but am confused. Distortion said to be radial scar....never been hurt or hit in breast. But could be from first mammogram cause they did flatten more than I could tolerate. Hurt for days after. Mass said was benign can't remember what they said in entirety. Now want me to go to surgeon and have both removed instead of just regular checks. Why do that? I asked to just keep eye on it in case it changes and I was told it would not change but to have both surgically removed. There could be something hiding. I just don't want unnecessary surgery because they want it. That is where my confusion lies, why tell me surgery when biopsies are benign? Any thoughts appreciated.

Alakai, radial scar is not what you think of as scarring from an injury. It is actually a breast condition, also known as a complex sclerosing lesion. They are called that because the radiographic image looks like a scar. In a small percentage of these there is associated cancer in the area, so they excise them to make sure there is nothing else lurking there.

Good morning Alakai,
I went through the same thing as you in January/February. My biopsy for microcalcifications came back benign but showed a small radial scar as well. They referred me to a breast specialist who recommended an excisional biopsy. When I asked why it needed to be removed if it was benign, she said that in about 10-20% of cases, the radial scar hides malignant cells. Since the biopsy only looked at a piece of it, they needed to remove the radial scar to make sure there wasn't any malignancy. The procedure itself was minor - started at 9:45 am, took about an hour, and I was home by noon. I had very little pain before or after the procedure (felt more discomfort during and after the biopsy). The incision was maybe an inch long. Got the results back a few days later and everything was benign. I feel the same way you do about surgery, but I do feel better knowing it's been checked out.
Good luck!

Got the call for surgeon consult. I also heard again what was told to me last night. On first call only heard Benign then surgery. This call went thru it with nurse...benign but with Highrisk. Found atypical cells in mass, called it a word can't remember, distortion was benign but with Highrisk factors. I just wish I could get a copy of pathology report right now. I am comfortable with these findings and surgery to get final results.

Hi Alakai,
I have been diagnosed with a radial scar too. I am booked in to have it removed with a hook wire excisional biopsy for the same reason that flamom mentions. I can't wait to know for sure if this thing is benign or not! flamom how did you find the biopsy? How much time would you recommend taking off? I asked the lady from the hospital who called me to make the booking but she didn't know. Really hard as I am starting a new job on Monday and have to ask for time off for the surgery which is the week after! Such bad timing.
