I am 45 and was diagnosed 4/1/16 with invasive ductal carcinoma stage 1, grade 2, size 9 mm. My lumpectomy is scheduled for 4/26 and follow up with Brachytherapy. Had a breast MRI with contrast on 4/14 and results show another small mass 4 cm away size is 1.5 cm. now my world is turned upside down thinking I may need a mastectomy vs lumpectomy. Biopsy on second mass scheduled for weds 4/20. Has anyone had MRI show something that 3D Mamo or ultrasound didn't see and if so what was outcome? Mentally preparing for mastectomy but hoping biopsy results show a cyst?? Thanks this is myfirst post to this site!

yes! Please keep in mind that there are many false positives on MRIs. I had 5 suspicious lumps show up on it and only one was malignant. The good thing about them is they very rarely miss anything but the bad thing is they can lead to more biopsies. I think they are a must before any surgery though. Good luck and keep us posted...

My pre-surgery MRI showed my 7mm IDC to be 1.5 cm (it was 7 mm at surgery) and also showed what they thought was DCIS surrounding the tumor-no DCIS at surgery per final pathology reports-but very big margins since they took out more tissue than they needed to due to this phantom DCIS seen on the MRI.

MRI also failed to show my positive node.

MRIs seem to be a good tool, but they are far from being as accurate as a biopsy.

similar story here. My tumor showed up as a microcalc on my screening and then diagnostic 3D Mammos.

Actually I had a microcalc in the right breast as well, luckily that one turned out to be benign.

(Thank god I had a friend take me for the double biposies, one on each breast, because I almost passed out when they were done)

My breast MRI is scheduled for this Thursday. There is another microcalc in the left breast, but that's been there for a few years on the mammos so hopefully will turn out to be nothing. My breast surgeon assured me its a good precaution before surgery, and he's a "belt and suspenders" kind of a guy. He keeps telling me I'm lucky they caught it so early, but I'm too paranoid to really believe that until the full pathology report comes back after surgery (assuming nothing does go wrong before that)

Wishing us both the best of luck, and keep us posted.
