Male (possible BRCA2 carrier)

Hi all, I am new to the site and just wanted to express some concerns

My mother is a BRCA2 carrier, so I am aware that I have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the gene fault.

I am a male, aged 27, so shouldn't really be worrying too much! However I received a CT scan to the chest and abdomen around 5 years ago, and I am concerned that this may have raised my chances of something happening, as ionising radiation is seen as a risk factor.

I was just wondering if anyone had any information on this, or indeed if there are any males with similar worry. What should my first step be

I wouldn't worry about your CT scan causing you any issues. As to your potential BRCA2 status, it is up to you to decide on genetic testing. Should you be positive, your lifetime risk of getting breast cancer would be about 8 percent. Keep in mind that the average age of males diagnosed with the disease is 65. Hope this helps put your mind at rest.

I would agree that you might feel better talking to a genetic counselor. They can explain the risks of potentially having the BRCA2 mutation. I have the mutation and from my understanding the risks for men are higher after 35 to 40 years of age. One CT scan isn't going to cause you significant harm.
