Fibroadenoma surgery help

Hi!, I'm 20 years old and found a lump June last year. After being referred to the hospital I had an ultrasound which couldn't determine what the lump was. So I had to have a needle biopsy done aswell.

The results came back and I found out it's a benign Fibroadenoma. It's quite big and the consultant said if I want it removed we could easily do it but I left it a while as it wasn't really bothering me.

I believe It's a complex fibroadenoma and therefore could increase the chances of breast cancer which I only found out today! It's also grown in size and has become horrendously painful I can't wear a bra and nothing eases the pain. So automatically I want it removed!

I went to the drs to be referred again to get it removed and the new dr I saw advised I shouldn't have it taken out and I should deal with the pain unless it gets worse?! Apparently it could increase my risk of cancer if I have it removed? So confused about what to do! Would like some help please!

If it is quite big and painful and bothers you, have it out. At your age though you might have another one next month. I think you are misunderstanding some things. Your doctor is probably telling you that having surgery causing scarring in your breast that may make detection of true problems via mammography more difficult in the future when you are old enough to be at risk of true problems.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "complex" fibroadenoma - fibroadenomas don't "change" into cancer or anything else-they are benign. 60% of women have fibrocystic breasts.

My fibroadenoma stayed in my breast for 35 years, was quite large at 4cm and it was painful before my period. No real problems. However it did change and became IDC, a very rare finding in fibros, after all those years. If I had to go back, I would not have it removed, but mine did show sure signs of cancer that I ignored and let it become invasive. It took 35? years. LIKE I SAID A "RARE" finding.
