Hi,

I learned there is a new test called Bioimpedance (http://www.lymphnotes.com/article.php/id/468/) that can be done regularly to monitor lymphedema also can be used to detect lymphedema early. Has anyone done such test before? And better get one done before surgery?

Originally I learned the test from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ie8FlE2BBY (Life without Lymphedema -- Stephanie's Story)

Thanks

    Hi, MoonBlue,

Bioimpedance isn't actually accurate for diagnosis of lymphedema, though some therapists use it for monitoring swelling during and after treatment. (The company behind the bioimpedance machine has previously made some claims about their product which has resulted in confusion about its actual use.) Instead, ask for a referral from any doctor on your team (even your PCP) to a well-qualified lymphedema therapist for pre-surgery baseline arm measurements and personalized tips for lymphedema risk reduction. Here's how to find a well-trained lymphedema therapist near you:

The good news is most women who have had breast cancer never have to deal with this nasty side effect of treatment, but BRAVA TO YOU for being aware and on top of this!

    Be well,
    Binney

I had a lumpectomy with 2 sentinel nodes dissected 3 months ago. Before surgery I had this test done because the thought of developing lymphadema scared me. I thought it would help if I should develop it. What it does is give your doctor a baseline to go by and measure any swelling that may happen after surgery. Unfortunately I developed it 3 weeks ago. So my doctor did have this baseline to go by, although my hand and arm were swollen and I already knew what I had without even having the test again I couldn't believe my luck! I had a 3%-4% chance of developing lymphadema and it happened to me....ugh! I was so angry and upset with this diagnosis. I started therapy yesterday and I am starting to accept the diagnosis more and more. I think it is a good idea to have the test done before surgery,it may help you catch lymphadema sooner, before there is obvious swelling like mine. Having a baseline may be helpful for you.
