Book club? What do you think

So, what do you all think about doing a monthly book club, the subjects would be cancer related, or other topics to what we are dealing with? we could pick a book, then post questions and post our feelings and responses about the book?

we can talk about life after death

dying

living with cancer

or we can go totally off topic and just do something that lets us escape

If you are interested let me know...

We can pick a book, and then move forward

just as a foot note....8 years ago one of our members did post about reading a book a week (she is gone now)...and it really inspired me at the time...

just respond with a yes and maybe a book suggestion??

Thanks!

Fitztwins, I would love to do it. I'm an avid reader. Would enjoy others suggestions of a good read also.

I would be interested. A book a month is optimistic for me, but I'll do my best to keep up.

I'm just about to pick up "When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi from my library, so I'll throw that one into the ring as a suggestion.

I've always loved reading but find it takes me too long to finish a book to join a book club.

However, if the book club takes place I'd love to read peoples' opinions of books to see if I'd be interested in reading them.

I enjoy fiction mainly and some memoirs. Nothing about cancer. Cancer takes up too much of my life as it is. Reading should take me away from cancer.

Would it be too weird to break it out into two groups, fiction and non-fiction? Or alternate months? For fiction, just finished "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant" and am in love with the book. For non-fiction, I rather agree with Kessala on keeping it away from cancer topics. I read to escape.

I read lots of books about many topics, including cancer, health, dying, death and the afterlife.

I loved Kalanthi's book and also suggest the second half of Atul Gawande's Being Mortal, because it focuses on modern medical deaths from terminal diseases (the first half looks at dying from age-related causes).

Would be happy to join in conversations, if able, Stephanie

I'd be interested in non-cancer books or if it is about cancer, books with a very scientific focus. I couldn't handle any books about death. I got two chapters into "Tuesdays With Morrie" last year and had to stop

I'm with Kessala in that it takes me a long time to finish a book, but I am interested.

I've read "When Breath Becomes Air" and "Her-2: The Making of Herceptin..." recently, but I like non-cancer books too. :)

maybe since Fitztwins started the thread, she can nominate 2 or 3 books and we can do a quick survey of who wants to read what? Majority rule.

Then maybe switch the book "chooser" each month?

I would love to join this, participate as I can given being in hospice now. I would put in a plug for When Breath Becomes Air, which of course is a personal journey with cancer, but also a beautifully written book about what it means to LIVE with cancer. I loved it and am reading it though the second time.

Logistics-wise, I think it is always good to have a "leader" since making decisions with a group can get end up going in circles sometimes. Fitz - I think if you're offering to lead, that would be awesome.

I think I might enjoy this. I actually don't mind books about death, dying, mortality. But it would be good to switch it up now and then. Great suggestion.

Just saw this thread - I would love to do this too! I'm game for however folks want to do it, but I thought the idea of alternating months was a good idea too. Maybe every other month, a non-fiction, such as "Being Mortal" or "When Breath Becomes Air" and the other months, a fiction novel, just for fun. Then, folks could decide to opt out some months, if it was a book they didn't want to do. I'm in another book group and could throw novel suggestions into the hat, but I'm interested in the other books too.
