I am scheduled for implant exchange surgery next month on one breast. The doctor has given me the option of having an implant put in the non cancerous breast so that they will be symmetrical. I'm so confused. Has anyone gone through this. Any words of advice

    Hi Jacksgirl-

Welcome to BCO! We have some info on altering your healthy breast on our main site that you might find interesting: http://www.breastcancer.org/treatment/surgery/reco.... Some women choose this option to maintain symmetry in their breasts, but it's definitely a personal decision. Hopefully the information on our main site helps, and more members from our community chime in with their experiences. Please let us know if we can be of any more assistance!

    Hi Jacksgirl,

I just had a breast augmentation of non cancerous breast at the same time as the tissue expander to implant on cancerous side. This was following a skin sparing nipple sparing mastectomy and tissue expander insert 6 months ago.

I had a breast lift and small implant put it the non cancerous side. The non cancerous breast sagged a little which always makes the aerola larger Most breast lifts include removing some breast tissue a small implant and aerolar reduction. It looks great. Of course, on the cancerous side, you will need a breast implant that is at least twice the size of the other non cancerous side, because you have zero breast tissue after a mastectomy.

A fat grafting may possibly follow after on the cancerous side because there might be a gap on the top. After a mastectomy, the sloping of the natural breast is lost. I have silicone implants by the way. Also always choose a board certified plastic surgeon, especially one who specializes in breasts.
