Recurrance with sore on breast?
Hello, I was recently diagnosed with a recurrence and am having PET scan on Thursday. I had scar tissue from my original lumpectomy in 1999 and over the past few months or so I noticed a lump growing in the same breast. I finally went to the doctor when a small dry looking patch appeared on my lumpectomy scar which was right where I was feeling the new lump. In a few weeks the dry patch turned to a sore and a biopsy of the lump confirmed the recurrence (3.2 cm tumor). Just wondering if anyone else has had sores show up like this?

I had a bmx in 2/12. December of that same year I noticed just a red dot on my right breast. Plastic surgeon didn't seem to think it was a big deal. It continued to grow into like a pimple until I wanted it gone because it was noticeable if I showed any cleavage as in a V-neck tshirt. Plastic surgeon sent it off and it came back IDC. New BS said this happens in 2-4% where it comes back on the surface of the skin but can be anywhere on the body. Still not sure I understand it all but mine came back and it was on my breast( my diep breast).

Thank you for the reply. The lump under the sore was biopsied and came back IDC tioo. It's such a pain and it continues to grow and has now spread to the aerola, it's a pretty large sore that looks like a large scab but it doesn't weep or ooze. But sometimes my breast itches like crazy! It sucks because I've known since 2/8 that the cancer is back and I just want it gone! Tomorrow is the PET scan and I'm nervous as hell! I chickened out the first time so this time I'm supposed to take a valium and I'm afraid of the results. If it's clear, I'm off to surgery for a double mx but if its not, I get to deal with treatment plans again. I just want it to be over!!
-
Take the valium. I am much calmer this time as I weigh my options. Got a second opinion and new doctor found another lump on my sternum. Had a sonogram yesterday and they wanted to do a needle biopsy. I am already scheduled for a lumpectomy so I said no. Look at it when you take it out. Stay strong and take valium!
-
I did take the Valium and it didn't do much for me but I was able to handle the PET scan. Now the waiting begins. So you had a double mastectomy but still had a recurrence? I'm not sure how to read your stats.

Had IDC and ILC in right breast and DCIS in left breast in 2012. Did BMX in 2012. My little pimple bump came up on right breast and was removed in January of this year. Positive for IDC. Now I have a growth found near the sternum by my right DIEP breast.
-
Shannon Leigh, how did your PET scan go? You can still have a local recurrence after BMX. It just reduces the risk.
-
The scan went ok, took a valium first! As I type this I am sitting here waiting for my appointment with the MO. They got my results on Friday and wanted to see me this morning. It's crap to be going through this again. Thanks for checking in with me

Hoping for good news for you.

The PET scan came back clear!! I meet with the breast surgeon tomorrow to discuss the surgery and dates. I am very relieved to hear this news. Sounds like treatment may consist of the bmx and then perhaps hormone therapy? I took Tamoxifen for five years after the first diagnosis and handled it pretty good. So we shall see what tomorrow brings but for now I am excited to hear my cancer hasn't spread.

Great news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since it's hormone receptor positive and HER2 negative, they probably should order the Oncotype test. Talk with your MO about it.

Not good news after all......saw the surgeon today ready to schedule surgery for next week. Turns out the "sore" is the tumor breaking through the skin and that has been spreading turning to a "rash" and now the surgeon wants me to do chemo first to make sure and stop it from spreading further. I AM DEVASTATED. I never wanted to do chemo again and now because this is spreading quickly with no time to think really. They want to do a port tomorrow or the next day and start chemo right away. I am petrified and sick and pissed off.
-
dear shannonleigh, I am sorry this is happening. I don't have experience with your issue but I know someone will be along soon to give some advice. Good luck and keep us posted.
-
Shannonleigh, I am sorry you have to go through chemo again. Be sure to join the March 2016 chemo group. My Sept 2013 and March/April 2015 sisters were my sanity savers. My second time was easier physically but a little harder emotionally

I sure will do that thanks for letting me know. I saw the MO today and now she and the surgeon seem to think that the tumor that broke through the skin has now started to turn to inflammatory BC. I am having mixed feelings about this as I don't seem to have IBC type symptoms. I mean yes, the sore itself has spread (the scabby looking thing) and now there is an area on my breast that is like a rash but other than the rash (and itching) I don't seem to have any of the "normal" IBC symptoms. Does this sound logical? That I could be diagnosed through biopsy, etc. with IDC and that the doctors think it is spreading as IBC?? I am having another ultrasound tomorrow so that they have a "new" baseline of the tumor before I start chemo and I have appt for port on Friday. I am going to call the plastic surgeon that I saw a few weeks ago when I thought I may do reconstruction and see if I can get in either tomorrow or Friday and see what he thinks. I understand their wanting me to do chemo first if that is the case as the BC wants to be sure and get clear margins and all that but I just have an unsettled feeling about this.....oh and the MO said my chemo treatment will consist of Cytoxen/Taxotere. I had the Cytoxen 17 years ago when first diagnosed and Taxol but not the Taxotere. Kind of weird to me that 17 years later I'm having almost the same type of drugs.....
