Follow-up to Flat Epithelial Atypia Diagnosis?

Hello,

I've had annual diagnostic mammograms for many years due to strong family history. The annual mammograms always report scattered benign-appearing calcifications, and indicate that heterogeneously dense breasts decrease the sensitivity of mammography for detection of developing masses. Recently, I had a breast core biopsy with the diagnosis being "flat epithelial atypia (FEA, DIN1a) in a background of fibrocystic changes". However, it was found to be benign, with no evidence of malignancy. Aside from this pathology report, I have not heard from the laboratory about what follow-up, if any, if required. My family doctor is referring me to an oncologist for follow-up to see what needs to be done. Is this the normal procedure?

Thank you.

Ticking, Sorry I do not know the answer to your question, I am sure others who are more knowledge than me can respond. I am glad the report was benign. Hoping you get more responses soon, and let us know what the oncologist says. Hugs to you.

I was also diagnosed with FEA and ALH after excisional biopsy of a fibroadenoma. I was sent to an oncologist too. She treats me as high risk for breast cancer and I take raloxifene to reduce my risk. I see her every six months for a breast exam and have an annual diagnostic mammogram which she views in addition to the radiologist. Oncologists don't just treat cancer, they also try to prevent it- so don't be too worried!
