Suspected mucosal carcinoma -LATEST TECHNOLOGY MAMMOGRAM

In December 2015, I decided to change where I had my mammogram (older equipment) to a facility that had the latest 3D technology. My decision may have saved my life. In 2014, the old facility saw a spot on my mammo and had me retest later to say it was "nothing." In December 2015, the new facility saw the same spot and immediately called me back for another mammo and ultrasound. The mammo indicated two nodules. Ultrasound only saw one nodule. First nodule was biopsed and benign. Second biopsy attempted and nodule too close to chest wall for mammo guided biopsy. I have experienced no less than 20 mammo scans and 6 ultrasounds trying to locate the nodule that shows on mammo but not ultrasound. I just had a MRI to locate the nodule so that a wire can be placed to guide the surgeon for the excisional biopsy. I have one of the leading radiologist in our area working with my surgeon to diagnose what she suspects is a mucosal carcinoma. The nodule appears to be less than 1cm and has not invaded the chest wall and my prognosis would be good if the illusive nodule is malignant.

I will go into surgery on Wednesday for the excision all biopsy not knowing the final outcome - will it be simple surgery or more complex or multiple surgeries based on what they find? The team of doctors and nurses treating me have reacted quickly and with great care. My MRI Friday was very painful due to all the procedures I have experienced in the last week and I was about to tell them to pull me out when one of my nurses actually put her hands on my face and neck to massage me so that I could make it the rest of time in the MRI. My nurses have called to check on me and apologize for all I have been through trying to diagnose a nodule that refuses to show only on mammo.

I am so scared but I am determined. I know I am not alone and this brings me comfort when I have those tearful moments just wondering "why". If the latest technology mammo in available in your area, please take the extra time or drive further to get it. This new 3D technology has at least given me a fighting chance if this nodule is in fact malignant.
