I am the husband of a 48yr old woman who has just been diagnosed with suspected 3rd stage Invasive Lobeular Breast Cnacer (ILC). 3rd stage because offsetting lymp nodes look "funny". Bonne Scan was given a clear and are waiting on a CT scan. We are meeting with the Oncology Team here in Calgary Alberta. We are also looking at getting a 2nd opinion on the "traditional medical" methods at a breast cancer clinic in the US. Any recommendations for clinics/doctors/oncology teams in the US?? We are also investigating and getting opinions on non-traditional methods (e.g. naturopathic) to compliment the standard Chemo/surgery/radiation.

Open to all comments and suggestions.

Thank You

Hi BeesHusband, and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

We're sure you'll receive lots of advice here soon, but in the meantime we wanted to point you to the main Breastcancer.org site's section on Getting a Second Opinion, including info on Deciding Where to Go for a Second Opinion, and much more.

We hope this helps! Please keep us posted on what you decide and how your wife is doing!

MD Anderson in Texas, Johns Hopkins, Sloan Kettering, Dana Farber, MGH. Others may have other suggestions and mine are in no particular order.

As included in the Moderator's recommended links, Johns Hopkins has the ability to review your records without an in-person visit and I believe that several who post on this site have done this. I noted on the "Where to go for treatment"  link that there are several NCI centers that have a system in place for international patients, but in checking just on the MD Anderson site, if you don't have insurance coverage as an international patient you must pay at the time of service.  From a geographic standpoint coming from Alberta, Mayo in Minnesota and Fred Hutchinson in Seattle might minimize travel for you.

In my opinion, the Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is where I would go.

With a research staff focused on ILC, here, they are the only US institution to ever launch a clinical trial focused exclusively on Lobular, which can be found, here.

As far as I know, no one else in North America has as many resources and knowledge dedicated to this chronically understudied subtype.

Beeshusband ~ I'm sorry about your wife's dx. If you haven't decided yet on a second opinion medical team, I can highly recommend UCLA. What I especially like about them is their multidisciplinary clinic, which gives you access to a full team of bc specialists in one afternoon, at which time you are thoroughly evaluated, necessary tests recommended, and a tx planned laid out. I'll give you a link to it, as well as to other NCI-designated cancer centers, all of which have similar, top tier bc experts and offer leading edge care.

Feel free to PM me if you need more specific info' about UCLA, which is where I've been treated (along w/some well-coordinated and overseen local care due to distance) since 2008.
