When I had my lumpectomy, I was fortunate to have a friend of mine, Linda, as my pre-op nurse. She arranged for the best person she knew from nuclear medicine to do my injections. Linda warned me that it would probably hurt, told me that I could squeeze her hand as hard as I needed, and yell or scream, or anything else I needed to do. (EMLA or anything like that was never mentioned.) I had 4 shots around the areola, at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions around it. They did sting quite a bit, but the gal was so quick that by the time she did the 4th one, only the 3rd one was still stinging.

I have a needle phobia myself. I went through this this morning and it was not bad at all, just a tiny sting. Honestly it was a lot less painful and less traumatic than my needle biopsy last week. Find something in the room to concentrate your focus on, sing a little song in your head and relax your body. I'm prone to panic attacks and didn't have a problem. Does not hurt to say a little prayer either. Good luck, you got this!
