edited November 2015 in Waiting for Test Results

Hi all. I am new here. Found a lump last week. Had diagnostic mammogram yesterday, followed by an ultrasound, followed by a biopsy. My biopsy results will be read to me Monday at 2:00, but Doctor went ahead and scheduled my surgical consult with the Duke Cancer Institute.

Now I know they won't know anything till results are in. But is is normal protocol to jump the gun and schedule the surgical consult prior to even having the results?

Thanks

Peace to you all.

When I was first getting diagnosed I got several appointments scheduled ahead of results in the "better to have and not need" thinking, since sometimes it can take a few days to get in etc. so consider it a good thing, they are taking care of you, you'll be seen quickly since you have appointments lined up.

That's what happened to me too! I also get my results on Monday (maybe a preliminary result today). My appointment is at 3:00PM on Monday. Good to know I have someone to wait with.

    Firedaizey and Mya-

Thinking of you both during this difficult wait, hoping for benign results! Keep us posted when you know!

Yes, it is normal. I was referred to imaging by my OB/GYN after she felt a lump, and she immediately gave me the name of a few breast surgeons and advised me to make an appointment. She said, "Even if it's benign, you may need to take it out," which made sense to me.

It’s not usual, but it is quite prudent and practical--often, surgical consults are hard to obtain in a timely fashion, especially with the more popular and highly-regarded breast surgeons. If you wait till results are in, you might be adding several more weeks to your timetable. You’re going to Duke? As good as it gets!

I was referred to my breast surgeon after the mammogram and ultrasound were done. Imaging finished and the radiologist came to talk to me and had already made the referral.

Yes this is usually the protocol. So happy your consult is at a great facility such as Duke. Good luck and keep us posted....
