Hello fellow IBCers ! I had a radical left side mastecomy Nov 4th and i noticed that there is some peau d'orange skin left behind? Is this normal ? I am worried he left bad skin behind.. i guess the pathology report will let me know and I have radiation no matter what but just curious :) Hope life finds you all well :)

Hi, Natejordlee. I'm sorry no one has stopped by to chime in yet! My diagnosis was invasive ductal with IBC features--I had dermal lymphatic invasion, but only in a 3" "spot" that was the umbrella over the IDC lump.

As you said, I believe the pathology report will have information on the margins of the skin of the removed breast, and hopefully it will show that there was no cancer in the skin margins. Nevertheless, I would be sure to show the areas of peau d'orange to your breast surgeon AND you oncologist.

How are you doing? Healing hugs coming your way!

Thanks for the response ! I had a pretty advance case of IBC but the good news is that my pathology report came back and compete reposne to treatment ... no signs of cancer left :) The skin looks like that apparently because I have edema which looks like the peau d'orange skin. Thanks for the response and sorry for the delay I had a few set backs but I am doing well and just ready to get radiation done and be finished with this . Happy Holidays !

Natenordlee, wonderful news! Thanks for coming back and giving us an update.

I had DIEP reconstruction on both sides. On the non-cancer side, there was an area that remained swollen for a long time, and the skin had the peau d'orange appearance too. I worried for a while, but it was the breast that had not had any cancer, and my plastic surgeon assured me it common and normal.

So glad you're doing well. Good luck with the rads--you're on the home stretch!
