Tychad, I had a bone biopsy done on my sacrum to determine hormonal staus. It was guided by a Ct scan. I was scared to death but it really wasn't that bad. They put in an IV, put oxygen on me , and just as they were going to get the sample, the nurse injected some medication into my IV and it was relativelypainless. They made me stay for 6 hours after in the short procedure unit to monitor for bleeding, but I didn't have any. No pain afterwards either.

    hi tychad

    I. had a biopsy of my pelvic bone. Like you I was frightened. The prep took a long time and my sister was with me and, she spoke up for me. I was given a xanax which was really helpful.

    good luck

    Tychad,

I think your biopsy may be to determine if your breast cancer has spread to the bone, not bone cancer which would be an entirely different thing. I had a biopsy on my upper femur. It was a piece of cake. I was given IV Versed and a painkiller. I was awake but felt nothing and didn't care due to the Versed. Recovery was quick and they even brought me a nice sandwich and iced tea. I did need to have someone drive me home due to the Versed but was home and comfy in no time. It's really nothing to be scared of. Good luck to you.

Hi Tychad. So sorry for the recent diagnosis. Spinal tumors, depending on their location are quite painful. The pain in the ribs could be caused by what's going on in your spine, or tumors on the ribcage itself. Either can make breathing a little uncomfortable. Is your biopsy going to be on a bone in your back or on the spinal fluid? The procedures are slightly different. I hope all goes well for you, and again, so sorry that you have to deal with all this. Perhaps there is even a chance that the biopsy will contradict what was seen on the scan.

Hi Tychad, I'm so sorry the diagnosis has been confirmed. I assume you have breast cancer metastasized to the bone as opposed to bone cancer? Bone cancer is an entirely different disease.

You can be treated wherever you choose. Fox Chase is one of the major cancer centers in the country. It's one of the NCI Centers. They will most likely have clinical trials and highly specialized doctors/experience.

If it is inconvenient for you to travel there for treatment, there are a couple of viable alternatives. You can get a second opinion on the treatment your other doctor recommends, or you can have the Fox Chase people set up a treatment plan and have your local hospital carry it out. Lots of women do this.

The most important thing is for you to find a medical oncologist you are comfortable with. This will be a long term relationship. You need someone who you understand and who understands you. If it's not a good match, find a different physician. Radiation oncologists don't matter as much as your medical oncologist.
