My mother in law is from Ukraine and was visiting my wife and I in August here in the states. While here she got diagnosed with breast cancer. My wife's grandmother died a few years ago from cancer in Ukraine so this was extremely bad news. Fearing poor treatment in Ukraine and knowing what happened to her grandmother they want to get her treated here.

My question is are there any programs that could help with medical expenses even though she's from outside the U.S.? My wife and I have been supporting them and paying for medical bills and everything out of pocket. It literally wiped our entire savings out and it's still not over.

    Any info would help.

RCraig, I'm sorry about your mother-in-law's diagnosis. And yes, treatment for breast cancer, is extremely expensive.

One thing I've noticed is that non-profits that are set up to help patients with medical expenses for breast cancer treatment are often local, as opposed to the larger non-profits, although those, too, have some specific programs that might help. If you want to post where you're located, that might help someone direct you to resources in your area.

In the meantime, if you haven't already, I would certainly call the closest American Cancer Society office and see what they can tell you.

Another possibly off-the-wall idea... Have you considered setting up a page on one of the on-line fundraising sites, such as GoFundMe? I don't know enough about it to recommend it, but it might be worth exploring. Here's a link: https://www.gofundme.com/

    Good luck! Deanna

Hi Deanna, thanks for the advice =) We're located near Knoxville TN. I'll try calling the local American Cancer Society office Monday to see if they have any advice. We started a youcaring fundraiser page but my wife doesn't want me to share with all our friends and family. People from Ukraine are extremely private about these things. Most of my family is broke anyway so it probably wouldn't help to tell them.
