All of my testing came back negative except for a BARD1 variant--c. 2116a g. I am headed for a lumpectomy in Dec. after I finish chemo, but am trying to research if I should go with a mastectomy. My surgeon has not recommended it, she says I am an ideal candidate for lumpectomy and my chemo has completely obliterated my tumor!, but she mentions the variant at every appt and that makes me just nervous enough to feel the need to check it out more. Any help? Anyone else with this variant?

If you haven't already, be sure to check out the FORCE website, facingourrisk.org, for more info on genetic cancers.

Most variants of unknown significance are eventually reclassified to benign. I too have one, on the MLH1 gene. My MO said that he hates getting this type of result because it freaks some people out, but that there is no reason to change any treatment decisions based on an variant of unknown significance.

Thank you, SummerAngel. I was wondering how most of these end up reclassified. I had no idea if they tend to go one way or the other. There doesn't seem to be any red flags with this particular one yet--google BARD1 and there is one variant that pops up very quick as a cancer link. I really like and trust my surgeon so far, just makes me nervous that she mentions it every time I see her, but I am sure she is just making sure we are on the same page since I see her every six weeks till chemo is done.
