my mother in law was just diagnosed with IDC. So far she has had a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy. The dr is recommending a lumpectomy (at which time they check lymph nodes) and radiation. The dr believes it is stage 1. Can you know the stage this early on? I thought they only knew that after surgery.

Hi Jenniferjeffries, sorry to hear your MIL's diagnosis. Lots of good information on the site. I believe the doctor is estimating the stage right now from the info he/she has currently. It may change once the surgery is completed and all the pathology reports are in. I hope it's a positive outcome and I wish your MIL well. Keep asking questions. Good luck.

I believe that at that early stage of the game, the doctor is probably estimating from their experience with the disease. My mothers surgical oncologist said that she was Stage II when they did the biopsy, but when they did her masectomy there was more cancer than anticipated and he said it was a late stage II or early stage III. Apparently, it is common for them to find more during surgery that can't be seen on the scans. I am sorry to hear about the diagnosis.
