Grading of LCIS - anybody's doctor tell them its "impossible"?

Hi everyone,

General question for you: My breast surgeon and the pathology lab are both saying they don't "grade" LCIS, only invasive cancer. But I see many of your signatures have a grade attached to the LCIS and ALL of the medical journal articles I read say that LCIS can be graded.

This is giving me general concerns about the effectiveness of my breast surgeon/center/path lab. I'm considering trying to send it somewhere for a second opinion.

How did your LCIS get graded? Did it happen automatically upon first pathology examination ?

I was asking myself the same question: I have seen people with 'LCIS' and a grade in their signature. My doctor doesn't grade it. He thinks the type of cells is of more importance than the size of the thing.

I see Classic, Pleomorphic and sometimes Necrotic or Florid but not usually a number grade. My surgery and pathology was done just a few years ago at an NCI Cancer Center and my report just says LCIS.

Mine were also not graded. Second opinion of my slides was from Sloan Kettering in NYC, also not graded. I think a second opinion is always a good idea.

I've seen the same thing MelissaDallas referenced. I've also seen it listed as "Class LCIS, Grade 2 LCIS and Pleomorphic LCIS" described.

Is it maybe that you're seeing the grade on invasive lobular (IL C) when someone has both LCIS & ILC
