Biopsy on Friday

Hello all. I am 43 and have a known fibroadenoma that was found in 2008 (age 36). It is stable. When I went for my first regular screening mammogram after age 40, I got called back because they found another larger mass in the same breast. They did a diagnostic mammogram and a sonogram. Now I have to have needle biopsy.

It is BIRAD-4. They told me not to worry, that is probably another fibroadenoma. When I got the sonogram/mammogram results it says that it is "2.4 cm oval mass with a circumscribed margin" and "hypoechoic". It has the same characteristics as my other mass, which is benign, except this one in 2.4 cm instead of 1.4 cm.

The radiologist did not come talk to me, but communicated through the tech. She said that since the mass is "new" they want to identify what it is and talked like I should not be too concerned. She said something like, "trust me, we would tell you if there was something to really worry about."

But I am the type that always thinks medical professionals are hiding something. And I am terrified of getting the biopsy Friday for some reason. Maybe its the thought of someone poking big needles in my breast, which I am quite fond of. And then I am going to have to wait a week for the results. I just have this strange feeling of doom. And I know so many younger women diagnosed with breast cancer. It is hard not to be afraid.

I haven't really told many people either.

So I am here, I guess. Looking for some moral support.

I know that a circumscribed margin is a good thing and usually implies benign (Not Cancer) . Hypoechoic means solid, not fluid filled. A Cyst would be fluid filled. However you have had a fibroadenoma in the past and those are solid. Sounds like they think this one is the same and the circumscribed margin is probably why they think so. So that is a good sign.I had a core needle biopsy back in June and honestly it wasn't bad at all. They numbed the area. Please try not to worry. I was diagnosed with Breast cancer, however my margins were spiculated. Circumscribed is a good thing. See below for info.

Thank you. It's good to hear that the biopsy wasn't that bad. They told me about the procedure when I had the sonogram, but I didn't really hear what they said. I was sort of freaking out.

I haven't paid much attention to breast health before this. It is a wake-up call. Either way, they talked like I would have to be more closely monitored than the average woman.

I had the biopsy and it wasn't too bad--mostly pressure and pushing, and tiny bit of burning when they took the samples. They told me that mostly "these things" turn out benign and I shouldn't "fret or anything."

I am glad its over.

Glad to hear the biopsy is over and that it wasn't too bad. I think the waiting for tests or results is always the hardest part. Looks like they are very optimistic. Have a good weekend and try (I know it's not easy) to not worry about.

Thank you for your encouragement. I still can't help but worry The doctor radiologist never spoke with me directly except to explain the procedure. Most of the positive "vibes" I am getting are through the techs, who--at least in one case--were speaking for the radiologist. But I do think the "oval and circumscribed" shape of my mass is a good sign, so I tend to believe them. Also, the first tech told me that I "would know" if they thought there was anything to really worry about. Perhaps the radiologist would've have come to talk to me in that case.

I am going to a very large and respected hospital, so I do have a lot of faith in their professionalism.

I guess I will just have to wait. But I got the impression that I might have to do MRI's every 6 months. I am concerned they are going to find all kinds of things that need investigating and I will have to go through this whole process often.

Sending positive vibes and hope you get your results soon. I am with you and tend to think that if they thought it was serious the radiologist himself would have spoken with you. Try not to think ahead and just stay in the moment with what you know now.

My results came in today. My lump is B9! I have to go back in 6 months, as they are going to watch me more closely in the future. Thank you, all you sweet ladies, for supporting me why I waited and worried. You are all so courageous and so sweet to help others. God bless you!

BTW, they didn't tell me what it actually is, probably a fibroadednoma. But I am sure I will get copies of test results in not too long.
