Newly Diagnosed - Care First Insurance

Options

Hi. I'm still waiting for my final diagnosis/staging. I have a PET scan tomorrow and a second biopsy/MRI on Monday.

It just hit me the financial hot water that might result from this. I'm petrified.

Has anyone gone through this on Care First insurance? I have it through my job and am really fortunate that it's very good insurance.

Is it typical that you have to come out of pocket on a lot of costs? My doctors are all in network (breast surgeon and oncologist). My insurance covers the PET.

We just moved to a new home and our savings isn't what I wish it was at this point. What should I expect financially?

Many thanks!

edwsmom, I'm very sorry for your diagnosis. I don't know any specifics about your insurance so I can't help specifically, but my suggestion is that you call the insurance company. Lots of them have "nurse navigators" or other folks who help with complex medical situations like cancer. They can give you an idea what to expect.

If they don't help, I would talk with your cancer center if you go to a big one. They have social workers and other people who help with insurance. They'll have seen all the insurance companies/coverages in your area and should also be able to provide guidance.

edwsmom, I had Carefirst when I was first diagnosed. I had no problems with them at all and were easy to work with regarding pre-approvals and such. I hit my out of pocket limit after one of my MRIs before surgery, so when I got to the surgery it was covered 100%. Like any insurance, just make sure you are in network and that should minimize your costs.
