Anyone Taking D-Ribose

Hi ladies, found confusing info on the the Internet was wondering your thoughts, research or personal experience.

I'm taking this as part of Dr. Sinatra's awesome foursome to improve my ejection fraction which dipped after Herceptin. But since it's a sugar (not a fructose) and we know sugar fuels cancer cells, is it harmful to take.

Thoughts?

Hi Mary. I took it for some time, but for a lactic acid problem. I don't think it hurt, but it didn't solve my problem either. My cardiologist did mention that it works well for protecting the heart.....not so sure though about what it can do for an already damaged one, which is the case for you and me. Good luck with it. I'll look forward to hearing if it worked for you. I'll maybe have to get back on it.

My naturopathic oncologist had me take d-ribose after chemo. It didn't bother me at all. As I read about it, and relative to our treatment, chemo is extremely depleting of the body so since this natural compound was used up and depleted by treatment our levels were in a deficit that taking a supplemental source for a while would help backfill. I took it a few times a week (more in the beginning) for about 6 months. My physical therapist who knows a lot about nutrition knew what it was as well. I had a lot of myalgia (muscle pain) post TCHP last year.

I found similarly that my histamine levels were elevated, something I had systemic reactions to that felt like elevated histamines based on my past seasonal allergy experiences, but weren't ever tested. My NO agreed to give me HistDAO, another substance that our bodies produce naturally which breaks down and doesn't just block histamines (anti-histamines did nothing) and I was fixed in a couple of days. I read about histamine intolerance and DAO and thankfully he understood what I was describing and had the supplement there for me to try. Rads caused this secondary issue for me -- something they never mention and doesn't show up in any studies.

PS - another post-chemo gal and I who developed ear-ringing from chemo (validated by hearing lab at our hospitals) we both recently had increased ear ringing and made the connection to aspirin-containing drugs. Evidently, even though we didn't find documentation to this affect, if you have hearing damage from chemo then you are at an increased risk for developing tinnitus from aspirin and possibly other drugs as well (any drug can be ototoxic). Fun stuff.

    Hang in there.
