A week ago I had a stereotactic biopsy of my right breast. They took samples from two areas. Got the report today and don't understand a thing on it. The phone has been ringing off the hook from the hospital, various doctors, and the health department. I've already been told I'm going to need a mastectomy. I have an appointment with a breast surgeon that's still a full week away but, of course, I want to know something now. Can anyone explain this?

A. calcs, superior lateral quadrant, middle depth(10 passes): IDC NOS and DCIS (low grade) Histologic grade: grade 1

total Nottingham score: 5

tumor size at greatest microscopic dimension: 0.3 cm

hormone receptors: ER+ PR + HER-2 negative

B. tissue, superior lateral quadrant, middle depth(10 passes): DCIS, low grade(solid type)

C. calcs, superior medial quadrant. anterior depth(8 passes): DCIS, low grade with focal central necrosis

D. tissue, superior medial quadrant, anterior depth(8 passes): DCIS, intermediate grade(solid and papillary types, focal central necrosis)

Ebony take a deep breath. This explains the need for so many samples, and out of all taken only a tiny 0.3 cm microscopic tumor turned out to be an invasive cancer (IDC )the rest is DCIS.

This is good relatively speaking, at least as I understand it, as it is invasive cancer that can spread. I hope some one familiar with DCIS can elaborate more on those findings, DCIS can potentially become invasive which is why depending on the grade it is usually surgically removed I think.

Dear EbonyEyes, we're sorry for the unwelcome news. If it helps, take a look at the article Your Diagnosis from our main site, that will help you understand also your pathology report. Let us know how it goes at your surgeon's appointment. Hang in there, we're here for you!
