In june I got that call from my gp, She sent me to breast surgeon had core needle biopsy, Yesterday got the news that that test showed no cancer. Yay. Then he went on to tell me that he wanted to do a Excisional biopsy, Have any of you been through this. My husband feels this is over kill that having surgery any surgery is dangerous. Just going a little nuts here, The biopsy was done on calsifatios, Doc. says their is a shadow under that he is worried about. Just wondering if anyone has had this happen. sorry about the rant.

I would want a very good reason to do excisional biopsy. Could they try stereotactic biopsy first? Or even an MRI would be less invasive. If the excisional biopsy ends up benign you will still end up with scarring at the lumpectomy site and that may impact any future mammograms/ imaging.

Was your core needle biopsy ultrasound guided? If not, yes, they do miss the target sometimes. They have very good results with ultrasound guided. Unless they just couldn't get to the shadowy area.

My thought is get a good reason, but do not ignore. Even though there is some surgical risk with excision all, ask any of the thousands of us here on bco if we would have rather known sooner than later, had it out sooner than later. Too many times I've read about women advised to wait and see. Then a big problem on their hands a year later. I would pursue it to its logical conclusion. You don't want to be wondering "what if"

In case it's helpful, I had an abnormality that didn't show up well on a mammogram. It did show up well on an MRI, and they were able to biopsy the exact spot that way (MRI-guided biopsy). I wonder if that "shadow" they see would show up more clearly on an MRI?

Hope all goes well with the surgery.

I am pretty sure he knows where it is he showed me on a sonagram in his office. What I don't understand is why when I had stereotactic biopsy they did not take samples from both areas. This is so new to me, I know I am not alone. sadly new to a lot of us.

    hi,

My two cents. You never know what is in the lump until you have it removed. I had weird b9 stuff in mine. An image is just an image.

If you re happy monitoring it, do that. If you re not or hesitating, get it out. Experience has taught me that peace of mind is priceless but then again, that s me. My uncertainty threahold is very low.

    Best
