OH (((Cubbie)))!!!! I'm so sorry about your fall. Yes that's just the sort of "last straw " event I mean. Feel better.
Octo- your day sounded wonderful! Good recovery from your Friday! Your garden sounds very well stocked! You will be harvesting in no time!
-
(((cubbie))) octogirl, sounds like a wonderful day. My grandson's birthday is during spring break as well.
-
Thanks Katy and Molly. I just feel so alone tonight.
-
Oh, Cubbie, so sorry you fell. It’s always those random moments when we'd done things a zillion times before without incident that smack us upside our assumptions. Yesterday, I was walking from my bed to the window and caught my left shin (just above the ankle) on the latch of the steamer trunk we keep at the foot of the bed. Ouch! Got a big swollen bruise and what looks like a scab (though didn’t draw blood at first).
-
Sandy, ouch! Your shin probably looks like my knee. You are right on the money. I'm sort of shaken up, and feel like I've lost my confidence in my ability to even walk out of the house without falling on my face! Before BC I would have just been embarrassed. Now I feel like I'm falling apart.
-
I have to remind myself I was having stupid accidents (stubbing my toe on sidewalk cracks and falling face down while breaking my fall with my wrists, bonking my head with the tailgate, slipping on ice, twisting ankles, etc.) long before cancer. Once I even slipped on a slush-slickened tile floor loading out from a gig and fractured my coccyx--talk about busting your ass for your art! Cancer doesn’t make us clumsy, but it also doesn’t confer immunity from “other shit happens.” (Sure wish it did)!
-
Morning all and hugs to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

{{{{{Cubbie!!!!!}}}}}}
Hope the morning light is helping.....
-
i so get the fall stuff, feEl twice, bruised both knees. Then my pt guys started creating little obstacle courses for me to practice picking up my stupid feet, it seems to have helped I also walk in the, pooand practice stepping high up
-
ARGH....just wrote you a long reply, Cubbie, and my post got eaten. Apologies if it shows up later and this looks like a double post, but anyway:
((((Cubbie))))....I am.so sorry to hear about your fall! I must have missed your post earlier when I posted mine.... I've fallen twice in recent years, both times in the garage and both times pre-BC dx. The most recent time was not long before dx, and I ended up with permanent vision loss! Let's hope that nothing like that happens to you...but do get checked out if there is any possibility you hit your head as well as your knee...The first time, I broke a foot! I've decided that garages aren't safe places to be...
Anyway, I don't know if this is true or not, but when I broke my foot someone in the ER told me that the type of injury I had and the falls themselves are more common for women than for men, and particularly for women over 50 or so, because our centers of balance change more than men's as we age (and now that I write this I am wondering if a bmx could do some of that as well?). Anyone know if this is true or just gobblygook nonsense? And regardless of whether that is true, I did just yesterday read a scientific study that Tai Chi can help prevent falls in older people...it helps with balance. apparently the CDC is promoting it. This makes sense for the same reason that Iris' PT probably really does help...
In any case, sending big hugs Cubbie and you are not alone!!!!

Thanks, Rainny, Iris, and Octo. Octo, I'm sorry your fall affected your vision! I knew you had a vision problem, but didn't realize that's what started it. Fortunately, I caught myself and didn't hit my head. I just have bruised knees like Iris.

True--after menopause, our centers of gravity get higher, especially if we start carrying more weight in the middle than in our hips & thighs. Our sense of proprieception (where in space we perceive our body parts to be, without having to depend on more than one sense to do so) also becomes impaired as our senses of sight, touch and hearing become less acute. Years of colds, ear infections, and exposure to noise and secondhand smoke can damage the cilia in our semicircular canals and impair our sense of balance. And once we’ve fallen, our bones are likelier to break because they’ve become weaker--even if not yet osteopenic. That’s why almost all lower-body PT includes balance and proprieception exercises.
-
sandy, interesting info, specially the info regarding exposure to smoke and such, maybe it is not so much my fault like i have been thinking, blaming too many pounds for very log time. Gonna keep plugging away at my pt tricks, just finished walking and standing with dumb weights, nasty but do feel the help
Ok, so how should I make the asparagus I bought, want just a light salary thing.........
-
Thanks Sandy! I was thinking you might know the reason for the changed center of gravity....I've also found that my vision loss has changed my depth perception, so I am extra careful now....and I tell hubby that cleaning the garage is *definitely* his job!
Gravity, balance and depth perception and proprioception matter much less (at least to me) in the water than in air (although when on scuba I do carry a gauge to tell me how deep I am because while depth perception may not matter too much, actual depth in the water matters quite a bit!). One more reason to love water-based exercise...So, since the rain shows no sign of stopping around here, I spent an hour in the pool at the gym, followed by time in the hot tub and in the sauna. Bliss for an Octogirl!
Disclaimer: it is *not* a complaint to say that the rain shows no sign of stopping. It is an affirmation. I will never complain about rain again...

good for you and may the April showers bring many may flowers, including early iris
-
Iris, I usually trim the asparagus (cut off the woody part of the end, then lightly peel till the spear’s the same girth its entire length--you waste a lot less than with the old method of snapping them at the flex point). I marinate them in olive oil and balsamic vinegar a few minutes, and grill them till browned on all sides. Season with a little sea salt. You can do it indoors on a ridged grill pan, flattop griddle, or large nonstick skillet.
-
Love steamed asparagus!
-
Hugs to everyone
-
good morning and hugs to all!
-
Good morning all!
Cubbie - I know exactly what you're talking about. My cholesterol came back at 249 on Friday, and that was it for the weekend. I wish all of us a better week!!
Barb
-
sandy, last night's dinner ended up as asparagus frit at a but got more so will likely do the steamed tonight
-
Anyone got root bear and vanilla ice cream to send me? I'm craving a root beer float!
-
Proud, you're contagious! Walked into the store fully intending to buy green beans and somehow found myself exiting with fresh asparagus. I think maybe a fake hollandaise. Or, anyway, lemon and butter whisked up together with a little salt and pepper. What could be bad? (Oh ye cholesterol and sodium nay-sayers, I don't want to hear about it. It's good for the soul, I say. Everything in moderation.)
-
M0mmy...here you go. I *always* crave root beer floats!
-
Here is a photo of the wetlands/wildlife refuge where I walked on Saturday....

Hello Everyone, I am a former friend of bco, but took a leave the past two years. I recognize some of the gals here and feel vindicated that I am not the only one that is needing support and a hand through my "journey" I met a sweet friend back in the beginning of my visits on bco and that person is Tomboy. Tomboy told me what a wonderful group this is, and so here I am paying a visit in hopes to maybe get a little boost in life as well as offer a shoulder to others. I wish you all well.
-
Welcome back Lizlori.
Of Crazy Town!
-
Well Girls - I ate too late last night and went to bed my early time as I get up to start work by 4am. I was sick burping the wonderful cioppino I made this weekend. Didn't settle at all... Been sick all day grrrr. Today has been a cracker and gingerale day..
Octo - What a wonderful place for a walk. PT won't let me do much walking or rebounding at the moment. Says it puts too much pressure on the shoulder joint. It is getting better and the weekends are really good at doing stupid things. Going a bit stircrazy.
-
Well, met with my Mo today... Plan is Tamoxifen for 3 months to see if that pushes me over the edge of menopause, as I'm close but Extradiol is still not where it needs to be for me to be on an AI. Check bloodwork every month to see where hormone levels are... As for Herceptin causing my neuropathy, well, they think its just aggravating the damage done by Taxotere and Carbo. That said, I had an infusion today, and onc says that if it is still at the same level I can take a month or two off of the Herceptin see what happens. At that point she may just stop the Herceptin... So.... that's that for the moment... Not very happy about the drugs, but I'll Warrior On!
Heading back up to the tree house... took my first Tamoxifen pill on the way home from the pharmacy... praying for few side effects!
Hugs to all of my crazies!!!!
-
(((Jersey))) Well done with starting. How do you feel about possibly stopping Herceptin? Nice to meet you, lizlori. I love rootbeer floats!! Octo, that is really beautiful scenery. Hello and hugs to everyone here!
