new lymphedema / just had exchange surgery
Hi everyone,
I had my exchange surgery 3 days ago, on 7/8/15, 2 weeks after noticing lympedema for the first time. I was able to get evaluated by a specialist amd have 2 therapy sessions, but have not been fitted for a garment yet. Not sure when I will be cleared for therapy--typically its 3 weeks, but hope I can get some therapy before then.
It was a little better but now noticing swelling in hand, wrist and arm again. Wondering if anyone can suggest things I can do right now. Are there some exercises that don't require lifting my arms above shoulder height? I've been doing self MLD as best I can. Have other members had professional MLD in the week or 2 post surgery? Or used the compression machine?
Any other suggestions?
The board has been very helpful in getting up to speed. Like some other members I am hoping the new implants and scar tissue removal will have a positive impact on my LE.
On a positive note, I can already tell the implants will feel more comfortable than TE's.
Thanks so much.

I don't know how much it will help, but I have heard it helps to elevate the arm whenever you can. It can't hurt. Best wishes.

Hello, Gingerlime, and welcome!
Elevating your arm is good advice, but hard to do when keeping it below shoulder height. Easiest at night, on pillows. Also, pump your fist open and closed often. Take several deep abdominal breaths at intervals throughout the day (that stimulates the largest lymph vessel in our bodies). Stay REALLY well hydrated (that helps dilute the lymph fluid and keep it moving. Water's great; avoid caffeine. Since your hand in involved you might want to try Imak, Dritz Comfort Gloves or Isotoner Therapeutic gloves--available at drug stores or even Walmart-type stores.
Rest up! Be well! And please do keep us posted. Gentle hugs,

If you have been cleared for MLD this is a good video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSD7j8mSVkM . My LEPT says that the number of reps can be lowered to 7. I started doing arm MLD along with the video but have to pause a few times to keep up.
