Reoccurrence of Triple negative - help

I'm seven months out of chemo and radiation and have been diagnosed with a reoccurrence, grade 3, 1.5cm in the same breast. I had chemo and radiation as recommended. I'm not waiting for my oncology appointment. The breast cancer center is recommending a mastectomy. I'm not sure what the oncologist will say. My questions that I'm hoping someone else has some experience with:

1. Has anyone chosen to do a second lumpectomy instead of a mastectomy on a reocurrance?

2. What is my risk of reoccurrence with a mastectomy and another round of chemo?

This is so disappointing.

    Hi Supportmom,

I'm sorry to hear that you had a recurrence. I begin AC x4 then Taxol x12. I was dx tnbc on 5-11-15. Still difficult to accept. I did lumpectomy. Wish now I'd have done mastectomy. don't blame you for deciding on the mastectomy.

How are you doing now? Plz update.

I was 17 months post final tx and found another lump by LX scar. I was not given a choice, because it was such a quick recurrence a salvage mastectomy was unanimously advised. I was given the option of immediate diep and jumped at the chance to not let cancer take more from me- so happy with results.

I am now doing platinum chemo- cisplatin and Gemcitabine. Hopefully this gets rid of it for good, but I know it's not a great sign that it came back so quick.

First time I did FEC-D (high dose vs. dose dense), achieved PCR, had LX with great margins and did 33 rads. I should of had this beat everyone was shocked it was back.

There is always a risk of recurrence even with a mastectomy as there is always a bit of breast tissue left. I worry about circulating tumour cells in the blood.

I'm sorry your facing this again- it sucks.

    Hugs xxx

I was diagnosed with TN 25 yrs ago, and at the time had a MX, as I didn't want radiation, even though my BS suggested a LX. As it turned out when they examined the breast afterward the pathologist said that I had a couple of other small tumors forming and I likely would have been back in a year or two doing the whole thing over again. Also as Siv says , a mastectomy is no guarantee of anything and just as safe as an LX unless your BS has a good reason to recommend an MX. Sorry you have to deal with this all over again
