Seen on MRI, But Not U/S?

edited June 2015 in Waiting for Test Results

Long story short. In April 2014, a mass was seen on mammo and u/s at 9 o'clock in my left breast. In Feb, 2015, it had grown by 1mm. Not a huge growth, I know. On June 1, I had an MRI and was told I needed to have a follow up u/s. I was prepared to blow it off, until I was told the MRI found the mass at...9 o'clock in my left breast. Hmm. I got the report yesterday and it is now 1.2 cm. But, the radiologist could not find it with u/s. The radiologist who has been reading my films is on vacation (of course), and will be back Monday. At that time, the two doctors are going to consult, and I may need an MRI guided biopsy?

I am not happy about the amount of growth, clearly. I am well aware of the false-positive and false-negatives given by MRI and would be inclined to think this was one of those, except it is in the same spot. My question is...why was it seen on prior mammos and u/s, now MRI, but not the u/s yesterday? It's pretty confusing to me.

I have not had the same experience...Just wanted to say that I hope it all goes well. Are you able to feel it at all?

My Lobular Breast Cancer was not seen on Ultrasound, but was seen on MRI? Lobular is very hard to detect on Mammogram and in my case Ultrasound didn't see it either. However it was picked up by MRI. Good luck to you.

Since my post the other day, I've learned the doctor I saw this week is not certified in reading MRI's. The other radiologist I've been seeing is certified, and it's one of her clinical specialties. So, I wait.

Lefty, I can feel something in that area when I shower. However, I've made it a point not to poke, prod or grope myself. I know it's there, but there are other lumpy bumpy things, so I'm choosing not to play Where's Waldo with the dang thing.

Fizzdon52, the doc I saw this week did let me know ILC seldom shows on u/s. I trust the original radiologist, and will see what she thinks the best plan is. Hopefully, by early next week.

I was wanted to check in, and wrap this thread up. The radiologist found the spot with the u/s today. It is still 8mm, so has not changed. She is 99% sure it's benign, and said there is nothing about it that gives her the heebee jeebies. That's good enough for me. My NCI risk assessment is 23.1%, which from what I understand, is about as accurate as a coin toss. So, I can get back to my normal life, after having just about every known test. I do have to have yearly MRI's, though. I am so, so, so grateful the doctor was thorough enough to order all these tests, in order to have a solid answer.
