To begin with I was Stage 3 and have been cancer free from 6 years :). I had a double mastectomy and immediate reconstruction, followed by Chemo and Radiation. I ended up losing 1 side my Plastic Surgeon tried a Tram Flap which was a total disaster. At the end of a 13hr surgery (which should have only been 6 hours), I woke up with my breast completing gone and you can see my chest bone under a very thin layer of skin (grafted). This was approx. 2 1/2 years ago and now I am considering additional reconstruction. I have visited a plastic surgeon and he has recommended expanders put in my back to create enough excess skin to do a Latissimus Flap. I just don't know what to do.  This procedure would cause me go around looking like a Camel :) and would take approx. 3 months from start to finish. I have tried to find pictures of women that need as much skin as I do and also pictures of expanders put in the back of an individual and can't find any. My husband does not want me to get this surgery. My appearance does not bother him but it bother's me. I have yet to let him see my chest after 2 1/2 years. I don't feel as if I can be satisfied with the state I'm in. I a way I feel selfish and no appreciative. I should be happy to be alive and cancer free. I would love any suggestions. Please make them positive but honest.

    SimoneJ,

First, I am so sorry for what you have gone through. And I totally get hat you want to be happy with your appearance. This is VERY personal. You are NOT being selfish!!!

I don't have any wise advice from experience. But just from what I have gleaned from A TON of reading, researching, and talking to a lot of girls who have been there . . . I would recommend a consultation with one of the premier breast reconstruction centers. Don't trust just any plastic surgeon as he/she might not have experience with every possible procedure that could benefit you.

I don't know about NOLA but I am pretty sure you could get some initial questions answered from PRMA in San Antonio that would help you decide if it is worth the trek down there.

I would love to go to one of the premier breast reconstruction cities. but My insurance would consider that out of network. I talked to the breast center in New Orleans, but I would have to find somewhere to stay for 10 days post surgery and the cost would be more than I could afford. I live in Kentucky
