Not DCIS after all
Hello All,
After core biopsy of three different spots in left breast (all same quadrant), I was told 2 spots DCIS grade 3 and the other was ALH. I originally wanted to go with bmx but family members talked me out of it. MRI suggested possibility of micro invasion. Again I wanted bmx, but due to lack of support went with lumpectomy. Just got results yesterday... Clear margins, but 8mm invasive tumor found. Just when you think you're done lol. Now I need to go see an oncologist and wait for the onco type for the tumor. I am 45, er and pr positive but don't know about HER2. Is chemo now a possible part of treatment? I know the lx and bmx would not really change the prognosis, but I am totally regretting my decision to go with just the lumpectomy. I just feel like every test comes back with worse news.

You can certainly go back in and have the mastectomy.

When you see the oncologist and radiologist, find out if you would need to have chemo or rads with a MX. It might make the path forward clearer. Best wishes on finding your treatment path!

sorry Rosie.
I went in with ALH and came out with IDC. I totally get your devastation. Folks said "oh you're so lucky you caught it " h@$$ sure didn't feel lucky. It is going to take some time for you to get over the shock. The oncotype will determine your next step. As mentioned you certainly can go back for the Mx. One step in front of the other for now. I'm so sorry. Gentle hug

I have a Grade 3, 8mm tumor, triple positive. We are waiting on the results of my genetic tests but I met with the MedOnc today. The recommendation for tumors <1 cm but >5 mm seems to be Herceptin + Taxol. I'm getting the sense that they'd rather do a lx rather than an mx and go back for the mx if lymph nodes are involved. I'd rather do "one and done".
I'm guessing you will likely have a better idea of what's next once the HER2 result is available.

Thanks. HER2 negative. Onco type will determine chemo. I also wanted a one and done surgery. My BS seems to be so against the bmx, not sure why. She did a phenomenal job with my lx though. I am DD so she had plenty to work with. Linda, I am also 8mm but not triple positive. I am surprised they aren't recommending chemo because of the HER2+. I don't know how the rest of you feel, but even though stage 1 is a really great place to be, this testing and waiting really blows. I have such a hard time concentrating at work because all I wanna do is research and learn.
