Thyroid Metastasis?

Options

As of now I am NED but will be headed for a thyroid biopsy this Wednesday. A suspicious mass was found on CT and ultrasound confirmed the CT suspicious findings. My first thought was a new primary cancer, but I'm reading that although rare, breast cancer can metastasis to the thyroid. Anyone been through this?

lucypug in 2002 I was dx'd with thyroid cancer stage 1. Removed all of my thyroid did one radioactive iodine dose and was great until 2012 when I was dx'd with BC. I remember asking my surgeon if the thyroid ca would put me at a higher risk for BC and he said no. Now I'm reading that there could be a connection. Don't know if my story helps you at all but just thought I'd share.

Kare, I think that there are times when doctors dismiss concerns too quickly. There is a connection with Cowden Syndrome but I don't think I have that. If you have family members with thyroid issues that might be something to consider. Thanks for sharing. Deb

It's good that you are getting it biopsied to be sure but benign thyroid nodules light up on scans, so there is a good chance it is benign.

Lucy - When testing after my dx, a 1cm nodule was found on my thyroid on Pet scan (SUV 3-4).  A biopsy was done and pathology came back as Hurtle's cells.  These cells can be either benign or malignant but can only be determined by surgical removal.  To this day, we don't know if it's malignant or not.  It's monitored during routine scans and has remained the same/stable.

I'm hoping for benign but I most likely will have some type of surgery since the area extends into the paratracheal and sternal region and is causing symptoms. I'm trying to stay positive but I have a history of "fooling" everyone on my med team. I should mention that I also had a triple negative stage 1 cancer in my other breast in 2011. I went to ICU after Taxol, zero neutrophils and a fever of 106. According to my onc, "no one has zero neuts". I'm also the winner of most side effects and drug intolerance. I don't mean to whine, but I'm hoping for good news. It's nice to hear that this is not common

Lucy - I hope this time will be the exception to the rule!  Best wishes to you.

The nodule on my thyroid was biopsied to verify bc or thyroid cancer or nothing.  My bc onc actually told me that I had thyroid cancer and I needed to see dr about it.  The dr told me no, test was indeterminate, they needed to send biopsy out to California for additional testing which would either still show indeterminate or benign. It came back benign but dr. said that it may need to come out if it gets any bigger because it may start pressing on vocal cords.  So far so good.  I hope that they find yours ie benign too, it sounds like you have had too much to deal with already.
