Ugh!!!!

Options

So I decided to call Unum (the carrier for short-term disability for the company I work for) and they said that if I have received treatment for any illness or disease prior to the effective date of the policy then it would be considered pre-existing. However, when I first started STD wasn't offered and won't be available to sign up for until July. I started beginning of February and wasn't diagnosed until April 20th so when I started it wasn't pre-existing as all I had was a mammogram. How the *bleep* is this fair?

I am no insurance expert but conventional wisdom would say that you can only get it when you do not plan on needing it! It's great that your company will have this option because group rates are generally less expensive than individual policies. Obtaining coverage while young and healthy is easy so let this be a lesson to others.

Even though breast cancer issues may be excluded, it still might be a good idea for you to purchase since other problems could arise in the future. Underwriting standards attempt to spread the risk around which helps keep costs affordable. Not much comfort in your situation I know but a fiscal reality...
