Affordable BRCA Testing In News
A new affordable genetics testing for Breast & Ovarian Cancer was in yesterday's news!!! The price for BRCA testing went from $4K to around $249.00. YESSS --about time ! You submit a saliva sample at home then mail it in to the labs. As I am pondering getting the testing because of second degree relatives with BC on both my parents' sides, this is AWESOME. Even with my current insurance coverage, I would have to meet the $2500 deductible so not real affordable. My genetics doc would write the order for it. I hope many of us can now do this simple test, especially if you have a daughter like I do and wonder if I do or don't carry a mutation....

Shelly - their doctor can order it for you and you don't have to get an order w your oc. I ordered it yesterday and it has already been shipped! Exciting news!

This is great news indeed. More and more I see BRCA in the news and databases being collected like this press release: http://newsroom.questdiagnostics.com/2015-04-21-Qu...
Do you have a reference for the testing you mentioned?

Here is a link to the company's site. If you do a search for color genomics you'll find articles re:announcement. My kit is in transit!
-
This is great news! I was diagnosed at 46 and denied the test.
-
Maybe more insurance companies will cover this at the lower price? Is this test inferior to the test that costs $4,000? I have some reading to do.
-
Apparently it is all self pay and they don't work or file w insurance. I compared it gene by gene to Myriads myRisk and it appears to be testing a comparable panel of genes.
-
FarmerLucy - that's great that you didn't even have to provide anything to order your kit. The news said our oncs (or genetics doc) would have to order it but if not, that's great ! I would expect the cost to be somewhere in the $100 range soon, according to my onc. I see you had prophylactic removal of your ovaries. I think since I'm post menopause, I could skip that surgery as this testing would be far less cost than doing that.
Julie - this is great news right? I hope this company is reputable enough to provide accurate results.

Sorry to jump in on the stage 3 forum but this is a topic I've been following closely and I saw Shelly's question regarding the reliability of the company. I think the fact that Mary Claire King is involved says it all. If she thinks they're reputable, they probably are, in my opinion. (If you're not familiar with her work, just google her or read some of the articles on this test. She's kind of the guru of genetic testing, and more.) Thanks for letting me intrude

Hopeful - thank you for your input re Mary Claire King. Don't worry about being in the Stage 3 forum! As you can see others here are not stage 3 --I didn't mean to discriminate as I also posted under the BRCA1 & BRCA2 forum. This is just exciting to be able to afford this finally.

Thank you, Shelly. It really is exciting to see this become available to all women. Having had to fight for the right panel testing for myself (actually, my BS did the fighting), I've become pretty passionate about the issue. Knowledge truly IS power and this knowledge should no longer be guarded by gatekeepers.
