Rita Wilson

Any one read about Rita Wilson's breast cancer diagnosis after many years of LCIS and recently PLCIS.  She credits finding the cancer by getting a second opinion on her biopsy slides.  The second pathologist found the cancer which was confirmed by a third pathologist.    The first one did not find the cancer.

I had my slides read by a second pathologist.  I asked for a second opinion.   Has anyone else had their slides read a second time?

Yes, I did. The first pathologist thought my tumor was ductal. The second said it was lobular....does anyone really know?

Gee, I would hope they would know.....

Nanka, did you also have LCIS or PLCIS at any time?

My wife had a 2nd opinion on the initial biopsies before BMX surgery. Both were consistent. After surgery, the final pathology was consistent with the biopsy. The only thing that was different were the KI-67 percentages, but they were very close.

@Nanka. It's odd that you had differing pathology reports. Perhaps there was evidence of both ductal and lobular. I've seen that on the forum from time to time. A 3rd opinion might be warranted in situations like that, assuming you can deal with the cost. Ultimately, the Final pathology after surgery (not the biopsy pathologies), are the determining factors that guide treatment.

I skimmed the Rita Wilson news. It's not clear to me if she had multiple opinions on the biopsy or Final pathology, or both. I assume the latter.

If it's helpful, there's another ILC thread discussing Rita Wilson: Rita Wilson has ILC

I just found it interesting that LCIS and PLCIS were mentioned by her and that she has had the LCIS for many years.  You don't usually read about LCIS when an article comes up about a breast cancer diagnosis.

John, was your wife diagnosed with LCIS prior to the ILC?

No. She discovered everything at Stage 2. If it helps, here's an excerpt from the Final pathology after the double mastectomy:

    Left Breast:

    • Multiple foci of ILC, Stage 2
    • Largest lesion is 2.2 cm, with smaller satellites measuring 0.1 - 0.3 cm each, [spanning macrosections 7-15, over at least 4.5 cm].
    • Extensive lobular in situ neoplasia (ALH & LCIS) throughout the sampled breast tissue.

The other "good" breast revealed hyperplasia (ALH) and all of the docs said to remove it since it's likely "on the path" to becoming cancerous.
