Fat grafting to get flat after BMX

Options

Hi,

I had a BMX in January w/ failed TUG flap reconstruction. I've decided that I don't want any further reconstruction attempts, but I've got lots of excess skin from the failed attempt. I will be having revision surgery to remove the excess skin in early May. My PS has also recommended some fat grafting to fill in my concave area which comes up pretty high and is very noticeable as I'm quite boney up top! I'm just curious to hear the experiences of others who have used fat grafting to go flat and fill in the concave area. Are you happy with the results? Would you do it again?

Thanks.

    Hi fralaliso,

I'm sorry you've had to go through failed reconstruction. I've not heard of anyone who's had fat grafting to fill in concavity. I chose non-reconstruction from the get-go. My chest looks smooth and flat, with no extra skin and scars that are virtually invisible (after nine years), but (probably because I'm thin) my ribs look very visible. I've sometimes wondered about fat grafting to fill them in. One concern with fat grafting is that sometimes a lot of the fat dissipates, though I think plastic surgeons have gotten better at it in recent years. Something you might ask your plastic surgeon about.

So, I'm sorry I can't help you as far as my experience, but please keep us posted about how you do and, if you try the fat grafting, how it goes.

Thanks for responding Erica. Yes, my PS did indicate that 30%-40% dissipation is probable, so he would over fill to allow for that. I'm leaning toward going forward with it. I really want this to be my last breast cancer related surgery so it's kind of now or never for me to get completely flat. Also, to be completely honest, the thought of getting a little lipo from the belly area is kind of appealing, too!! I will definitely report back about the procedure and the outcome once I have it done.

I know a woman who had this done and her body reabsorbed some of the fat, so she ended up lumpy-looking, not smooth at all, and one side was different from the other (due to different rates of absorption?) Just ask questions, don't assume anything. And please let us know how it goes. Like Erica, I did not have reconstruction, I am flat to the point of being concave. But I wear camis with lace edges and no one ever sees this. And it doesn't bother me. But I respect everyone's right to be happy with their body, so you need to go forward with what will make you feel better!
