pain in ribs below mastectomy scar a few weeks post surgery?

Hi Ladies,

I am three weeks post radical mastectomy and today my rib below my drain scar is very sore and tender. It feels bruised. It's about an inch or two away from the drain scars. I did hike with a very light pack today for the first time, but I'm really concerned. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Could the cancer have come back so fast? Thanks so much!

Hi Littleblue, this is pretty common I think. I had rib and chest pain, on and off,for many many months after surgery. It flared up after radiation as well.

Thank you Deb! I can't see my onc until Thursday and am pretty worried so I really appreciate your advice!

littleblueflower, I am over 2 years out and I still have that tender spot, on my ribs near the drain exit. It seems to come and go, but whenever it does flare up, it feels the same, as it always has. My surgeon says it is scar tissue.

Oh yes! My ribs and sternum hurt for almost a year but I am sure the chemo and rads didn't help. Slowly but surely it's getting better

Oh thank you all so much! Jeeze I spent a sleepless night last night poking my ribs to find more tender spots. I'm so glad it's normal! Well (new normal) anyway. Ugh....what a concept. Love to you all and thanks again!

My ribs are quite tender all around and under my scar, and over toward the armpit, an area about the size of my hand. As long as nothing bumps it, no problem, but if I "poke at it" like you said (even gently) then ouch!! It's been 2.5 yrs since surgery, I reckon this is the way it's always gonna be. From what I've read here, though, it's not uncommon and it's not a sign of anything sinister.
