Hip Pain

My left hip seriously hurts. I hurt my lower back in December when I tweaked it in the car. I started seeing a chiropractor who did this adjustment to my mid back and injured my ribs on the left side (same as the hip). The hip slowly improved and I reinjured my ribs again in the car this time twisting. It was two months of trying to heal the ribs which are now fine. My hip felt great for a while, ironically while my ribs were painful. My ribs are now healed and my hip is bothering me. I've been on tamoxifen for two yrs. and arimidex for 2 yrs. I had labs and tumor makers done at the time of my hip injury. They were fine. I am beyond scared to phone the onc. I mean the fear and depression is debilitating -- I mean to the point where I think it's not normal. And, yes I'm seeing a therapist and I'm on xanax and attivan. I just can't handle this, you know. It's all too much. Rachel

I just wanted to reply . Not sure how old you are, but my hip was hurting off and on and I called Onc. A bone scan showed inflammation. A trip to orthopedic doc and it was confirmed bursitis. Cordizoneshots help

I'm 55. My husband says old enough for normal aches and pains to show up plus i got off of a 29 hr. trip with ten days on a rock hard bed. But I don't think there is such a thing as normal aches and pains anymore.

Rachel, I totally understand how you feel. My right hip has hurt off and on for a while now. Then, it will move to my leg and my hip will feel ok. I have had knee replacement on that right knee, and have been stiff for long before my breast cancer but every time i feel anything as far as a pain, I just know its in my bones. Last October, we went to Florida and my hip was hurting that night until I literally cried. I felt it was possibly the Arimidex, so didn't take if for that week and after only a day, hip quit hurting. The past week, my leg has hurt if I walked very much and Saturday, it was so bad, I could barely walk. Today, I decided as an experiment, not to take my Arimidex and it has been much better. I go to oncologist next week, so I will let her know. I won't stop taking it, but will see how it is in the morning. I figure if pain has stopped, hopefully, its not mets to bones but the Arimidex.

thanks Angelia50. Do you think you'll try to switch to something other tha arimidex? Maybe I'll experiment and not take arimidex for a day or two. This really, really stinks and I'm so tired of being afraid.

Rachel1, please let your mo know so that she can rule out everything. I totally understand how you feel as I was in the same situation. I've had a lot of aches and pains since chemo and started to get intramuscular predisone shots, this has helped a lot- except for my hip. It's very painful all the time but it started after a trip to mexico where I was walking a lot. I got back and had a shot hoping it would alleviate the pain. It did nothing, so I waited the recommended 2 weeks and then called my mo. She did a complete metastatic work up and gratefully there was no evidence of disease! Apparently it is oestioarthritis and she recommended my rheumatologist look after this. I have just gotten an intramuscular shot in the hip but have not gotten relief. On researching this, I found that chemo can sometimes cause 'avascular necrosis' so I'm starting to wonder if this is the cause of my pain. Here is an article I came across

It's important to follow up with new aches/pains that are unexplained and last more than 2 weeks- the worry you are going through could very well be explained with something less fearful. Please keep us posted, hugs, Shari

Rachel1, I will definately try something else if I can determine its the Arimidex. Yesterday, it didn't hurt as much and as I said, it was in my hip, now seems more in my leg, today, seems my calf is hurting. On the positive side, I dont' think its my replacement coming lose because if so, it would continue to hurt. I take name brand, so I know its not the generic fillers. I totally agree, the being afraid to ask and afraid not to ask, is scary. I didn't have a PET scan after surgery because she felt it was not necessary. Its one of those things that I would like to have a clear one to know its clear but would be scared to have one for fear it would show something. One lady on here had a good point, that PET scans show so many false positives, that it becomes a game of wack a mole by the time they check out every little dot. I'm sure I don't get enough exercise and many ladies say that really helps. Seems about the time I decide I'll go to the gym, it starts hurting. But, as I said, I've had problems with stiffness long before any of this. I had a bad parathyroid in 2008 and I had gotten to the point I could barely walk. I also admit, I haven't been faithful in taking the calcium, so hopefully, its just a combination of not exercising and not taking the calcium.
