I was diagnosed in Feb with DCIS and also have Pagets; having surgery in mid-April. The DCIS are multiple micro calcifications patches on my upper right breast. . .they only biopsied one set and they came back as Grade 3 cells. I'm not positive of the location of the rest of the anomalies. Because the new micro calcifications are in so many places they are assuming they are all cancer and recommended a mastectomy. My doctor ordered a CBC and I also have moderate anemia. I have always been borderline anemic (I've never been able to donate blood), but my HBC has never been this low at 8.7. Other levels were low too. Is this normal? My breast surgeon said to contact my PCM for more bloodwork and that I might need an endoscopy. What other tests should I expect?

    MotherofFour,

I am very sorry about your recent diagnosis. I too had calcifications plus paget's disease. I selected mastectomy and after the surgery, there were two other small areas that were missed in the MRI that showed up with cancer (IDC). My breast surgeon was happy I chose mastectomy. As far as tests, I remember doing a chest xray plus complete blood work ,urine test, EKG and a bone density test prior to my operation. They will let you know what they require. As far as being anemic, I don't know too much about it. The hospital will make sure you are ready for the operation because they do not want to take any chances. They may require different tests based on each individual's health condition. Good luck on your surgery.
