Does anyone have a list of Hospitals or Medical centers with a specialty in Male Breast Cancer? I live in a remote area on the east coast and will have to travel to go to just about any doctor.

Thanks

Biggerguy- When my husband was diagnosed just a little over a year ago we had to make decisions quickly as we knew we needed to travel for treatment. Because BC is so rare in men I was unable to find any that said they specialized in male breast cancer. However, if it had been closer we probably would have looked at going to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. They may have other locations in the east also. Good luck to you.

Memorial Sloan Kettering is one of the best facilities for breast cancer in the world. Here's a link about their male breast cancer treatment.

You might start with one of the only 41 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the US. If you happen to be a northerner, here in New England, the choices are Dartmouth, Dana Farber, and Yale (the blue balloons on the site below):

Well, this site dropped the end of the address, but it's "extramural/cancercenters/find-a-cancer-center"

I have an appt on Monday at Johns Hopkins (I have already left body parts there - prostate!!). They are one of 41 designated cancers centers in the US. And the doc that I am seeing has a specialty noted on his bio in male breast cancer.

Will let you know how it goes.

I didn't find out until after being Dx'd in '07 that a great Uncle of mine had died of BC. That was in sometime in the mid 70's or '80's,not sure exactly when. Far to long ago for there to have be extensive testing done back then. It did affect my treatment somewhat when shared with my Oncology team. My brother hasn't been tested yet, but there hasn't been problems we're aware of so far either.

Biggerguy...you'll find the best information on your breast cancer treatment on this forum is located outside the specific male bc section. When I was diagnosed, I gave up waiting for a guy to post anything much on BCO, but I've learned heaps on all the other relevant sections of this site and the gals are great sharing info, as you would expect.

My experience tells me that treatment experiences and outcomes really apply to both sexes with two major exceptions: 1. Dont expect any breast reconstruction, it ain't done because there's not enough material left to work with once a male mx is finished. 2. A male's experience with anti-hormonal drugs such as Tamoxifen differ greatly from females.

You're welcome to contact me through this site if you'd like any questions asked or need specific info. I'm now a trained cancer counsellor.

the Via Christie medical center in Wichita ks. seems to have done a good job on me. true, the waiting rooms for tests were quite pink, and not a sports illustrated in sight but a little embarrassment can be endured. the only problem was that one of their older cat scanners was a bit small, but they said they had a bigger one if that one didn't work. they didn't drop me off the tables once, and I was always treated with respect. My surgeon didn't leave me with a scar, and I was told whats going on most of the time.

Thats good cliff. It's also great that you don't have a scar. Never heard of anyone having a mastectomy who does't have a scar!

I can see you're in Kansas. Do you know of theMale Breast Cancer Coalition based in Kansas City?

You can check them out HERE. They welcome new men and like to collect their stories. As you can see HERE.

Excellent. They are a great bunch and you'll enjoy the convention. I'm invited, but Kansas City is too far from Brisbane, Australia for me!

traveltext, you seem like a knowledgeable guy, is there anything you want me to spread at the convention? I plan on stressing testing guys on every physical checkup, and that gals should check their guys, if they want them around.

Cliff, Peggy from MBCC is running the convention and she will likely be in touch.

Basically, you'll be able to say anything, but your points are very valid. Could be, also, that there are guys that need to check their guys.

another stress point is that diabetics with neuropathy might miss lumps in self exams, like I did. the old numb hands, feet on fire neuropathy.
