Secondary family member positive; mom negative.

My mom tested negative for BRCA genes (in the 90's) and my first cousin was just diagnosed with bc this year, then tested positive for BRCA.

Would her findings completely separate from my mom's?

I am going back and forth with a genetic counselor. My mom will hopefully be tested again soon over a wider spectrum of gene mutations, but there is a lot of waiting time in all of this.
