Moving On and Moving Away?

Hi ladies!

I'm curious: have any of you continued with your plans to move out of state or out of the country after having been diagnosed, and if so, how long did you wait? I ask because I'm currently undergoing treatment (neoadjuvant chemo) and will have surgery later this summer. However, I was planning on making the move to NYC before being diagnosed. Right now is obviously not the time to up and go, but I'd still like to push on and make the move. I'm trying to get a sense of whether or not it's wise to move away from my medical oncologist and surgical oncologist later on.

Any experience or thoughts?

Just like DC, NYC has top notch hospitals and doctors. You might ask yours for recommendations in NYC. Don't let follow-up keep you from making such an important decision as relocating.

Best of luck in your treatment.

I had to change insurances and was no longer able to use my medical oncologist and surgeon shortly after my mastectomy (I had Kaiser and you can only see Kaiser physicians if you have Kaiser insurance). It wasn't a big deal. My new doctors got a copy of my medical file and reviewed it prior to seeing me. I wouldn't let fear of changing doctors impact your desire to move. It was mostly no big deal, in my experience.

I emigrated from the UK to Canada 7 years prior to my diagnosis.

I think, if I had had a previous cancer diagnosis I would not have been allowed to enter the country as a permanent resident. The medical examinations "to determine whether you'll be a drain on the resources" are quite stringent in that matter, and it is not unusual to be turned down for medical reasons! :(

Don't suppose you have the same issues moving within the country though. Go for it!
