Reconstruction after having implants before diagnosis

I am new on this site, but can find nothing about how reconstruction could be done after mastectomy when already having implants before diagnosis. Has anyone had this done? I assume the old implants come out, but not sure how the expander would work. I have not met with a plastic surgeon yet, and he can probably answer this, but I am curious to know from someone out there who has gone through this.
